My favourite part of the season.
It’s Round 1 of the DFB Pokal, the day when sharks not only can, but are reasonably likely to, meet minnows (due to the qualification and seeding system*). Today it’s more like “Turbot meets Tench” though, as the top & bottom finishers in last season’s 2.Bundesliga are drawn together.
*In Round 1, all the previous season’s Bundesliga (1) teams and the top 14 finishers in the Bundesliga (2) go into Pot 1. Then in Pot 2 go the rest of Bundesliga (2), the top 4 from the 3.Liga and all the Regional Cup winners.
In a nice twist, all amateur teams in Pot 2 are guaranteed a home draw.
SSV Jahn have never won the DFB Pokal, but ‘eff zeh’ have won it on 4 occasions, most recently in 1983 – as helpfully pointed out by a tifo in today’s away end (see pic).
