Today started badly, with the realisation that Deutsche Bahn have removed Tomato Soup from the menu in order to replace it with pumpkin. This is a potentially revolting, but hopefully brief – and seasonal- development.

But luckily I’m not the only one experiencing hard times. Or should I say, ‘tough choices’ or ‘challenges going forward’. It’s the battle of the basement here today as 17th plays 18th in the 2. Bundesliga, with the two teams level on points. Both sides had nightmare starts to the league campaign, each taking 3 points from the first 8 fixtures.

But… Bochum this week qualified for the last 16 of the DFB Pokal, and the draw is tonight. In the league they have improved with 6 points from the last 2 games. Meanwhile, FC Magdeburg, so strong last season, have struggled similarly, although their results have also picked up (4 points from the last 2) – in mitigation, they did lose their most important player, Martijn Kaars, to St Pauli.
We have to mention the home manager today, a well-known name in English football – Uwe Rösler. He has played and managed at so many clubs that it would be a pain in the arse to list them. But I think we can take a decent stab at which one he holds dearest to his heart when we learn that his two boys are named Colin & Tony..

Incidentally, the pumpkin was fabulous. Deutsche Bahn – the trains aren’t reliable, but the soup certainly is.
